Michael Anne MacDonald, B.A., LLB (Osgoode Hall)

Barrister, Solicitor, Notary Public

Having served her articles at the Crown Law Office – Criminal (then Special Prosecutions and Criminal Appeals), Michael was called to the bar in April 1978 and was counsel to the Attorney General of Ontario from April 1978 to April 1988, when she left her role as Crown Counsel and returned to her home in Port Carling. Having travelled the world as Crown Counsel on major fraud and terrorism cases (Miami, California, Germany, Washington D.C.), she was happy to return to Port Carling and commence the practice of criminal law in Muskoka-Parry Sound. Terrorism cases, murder cases, major fraud cases, appeals in the Ontario Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada (hundreds – including winning the landmark drinking/driving cases of Regina v Hufsky, Regina v Thomsen and Regina v Cornell) – Michael’s experience tells her not to trust the system.

Michael’s family roots in Muskoka-Parry Sound go back to a land grant from Queen Victoria to her great-great grandfather James Stephen in 1867 for services rendered to the Crown in the Singapore Tea Wars. The deed to him is on display in the Muskoka Lakes Museum on Bartleman Island in “downtown” Port Carling. Michael is proud to say she is a member of the board of directors of the museum and is a bit of a history nut. She still lives on part of her ancestors’ lands in Port Carling. She graduated with a B.A. in Canadian history from York University in 1973. From 1973 to 1976, she obtained a Bachelor of Letters and Law (LLB) from Osgoode Hall Law School, attending the first year of the now highly successful Intensive Program in Criminal Law. She was also blessed to attend Université Laval and obtain a diploma en droit civil en francais through the Department of Justice Common Law – Civil Law Exchange Scholarship in 1974. This experience led to her lifelong interest in international law and history.
